My colourful neighbourhood

Rose-ringed Parakeet in a mini-apple tree...
We have these cute little trees near the path to the shopping centre. They look like mini-apple trees, but I don't know exactly what trees there are - it may be berries of some kind too (so any help in identification much welcome!) .
Anyway, the little trees were blooming like crazy in spring, and filled with loads and loads of little fruits last fall. And you bet that a lot of our neighbouring birds knew where to go for they daily meal - not minding at all the people walking off and on along the path underneath the trees.

Rose-ringed or Ringnecked parakeet ( Wikipedia ) in the tree tops near my balcony – Amsterdam South_East, the Netherlands

These tropical birds, originally brought into this country as “aviary – birds”, have found their home, first in the Vondel-park in Amsterdam, and from there have been spreading all over Amsterdam. They seem to occur in other larger towns of the Netherlands and Western Europe too, where they are able to survive our winters thanks to the feeding practices of the city people. They operate in small groups of 10-20 birds, are a very noisy gang, and are always the first to find the peanuts on the feeding tables. But first, in autumn, they still have a feast on the many fruits- and berry trees in our neighbourhood.

The in the wild living populations were first observed in the Netherlands in 1968. They occur mainly in the 4 largest cities Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Den Haag and Utrecht. In recent counts (Jan. 2010) their number was estimated around 10.000 – a doubling of their number since 2004. (Source: Nu.nl )

We hebben hier in Delft ook een kolonie van die krengen. En laatst zag ik ook nog een paartje vliegen in Monnickendam.
Ze zijn gelukkig minder erg dan die vreselijke stadsduiven/ vliegende ratten.
