UPDATE (Oct. 26, 2014)

Did *nobody* except :iconmarx77: MARX77 see this journal when I posted it 2 weeks ago?
@KhuramLawrence : Thanks so much for the re-posting, my friend! I really appreciated your support!
But I had hoped for at least a few comments, or some sign or response...
Maybe some of you just went ahead and sent their support straight to Tammara ... That's all good then, that's exactly where it needed to be!
And maybe some indeed did not get to see the journal, so many goes lost in the dA feed - for me as well (an awful lot!) ...

Therefor, I dare to post this request once again... Tammy and her family have received great support from some of their facebook friends, and maybe some of her dA friends were able to reach them via that way too. Thanks to the help they received, they have been able to pay for the cremation of their son Jonathan, who died 2 weeks ago, and to bring his ashes back home from Arizona (where he lived) to Washington (where Tammara and her family lives) . But there is not enough money left to buy a box or urn, and for a simple but meaningful memorial service... So really, there is some more help needed there!

SO... please pop over to Tammara's facebook page and read my post on her page there.
Or go straight to GoFundMe or Tammara's Paypall account: Tammaralynn at gmail.com .
If you can still help (or help once again) - please do so!
And please do like or repost this journal, for a chance of more people to see it...

We can not take away this family's suffering and loss, but we can make them feel that they are not alone!

Thank you so much to whoever is trying to help!

(JOURNAL first posted October 12 : )
Dear friends and watchers,

I know it's quite a time ago that I posted a journal here on deviantArt, and it's probably even a longer time ago that you received some news here on dA from :icontammara: Tammara . But I know many of you remember her very well, and have been of big support to her, here on dA, when she lost her son Jeremiah now almost 6 years ago... There for, I dare to come back now and ask for your help on behalf of my friend.

Yesterday, Tam and her family received again terrible news... Her second son, Jonathan, who lived in Arizona, died on Saturday morning... No one can imagine how hard it must be for Tam and her husband Rick, to loose a second child. Moreover, they have gone through so much suffering and hardship during the past years, and due to serious health problems and economic reasons, they just recently filed for bankruptcy, and have no money to bring Jonathan home, or to pay for the cremation.
Many of you know Tammara. You know how generous and kind she has been always to anyone who cared to share about her work. You know how great an artist she is. I have kept close contact with Tam and her family all through the years, and can testify that Tam and Rick are hard working people, so trustworthy and honest, so brave to try and live through all the hardship that comes their way.
They do need our help now.
Therefore, I want to ask each and everyone who reads this, please do whatever you can to help Tammara and her family.
  • Please head over to her Facebook page: Tammara on Facebook to read for yourself what happened and Tam's request for help in her own words.
  • Then if you can help financially , please either head over to their "GoFundMe:Jonathan's funeral" - account, or send your contribution to Tammara's Paypal: Tammaralynn@gmail.com .
  • Please do share this journal, and ask your friends to help too.
  • And please do whatever you can. Every little bit helps, and if you can do more, do more! ...
THANK YOU!

OMG - Thank goodness for deviantART!!!

Journal Entry: Mon Jun 10, 2013, 1:55 PM

Hi, everyone!

It's a long time ago already that I updated this journal ... Time is going so quick, and so much is happening in between... I've had so many photography projects the past few months, that I couldn't catch p with my own pace, LOL :

:bulletblue: February-March 2013: A huge dive into street photography, encouraged and coached by two of dA's great street photographers: :iconnunocanha: and :iconburningmonk: - Thank you both so much for the great street adventure!

:bulletblue: March 2013 also: opening of an online gallery presenting some of my best nature- and street-work on Redbubble Steppeland gallery

:bulletblue: Feb-March also: several day outings and photo shoots in nature reserve "the Amsterdam Watersupply Dunes" - see some of my pics uploaded here on dA: here

:bulletblue: April 2013: course at the people's university on how to set up an own website and webshop

:bulletblue: April 2013 also: preparing and executing of a photojournalistic reportage on the Abducation of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and inauguration of her son King Alexander and his wife, Queen Máxima dA journal: "Royal celebrations in Amsterdam"

:bulletblue: May 2013: trying to select out and process some of my work of the previous months and catch up with the backlog .

:bulletblue: May 2013 too: starting to set up a little cards shop at Greeting Card Universe

:bulletblue: And now, June, I was almost, ALMOST ready to get back here and pic up some loose ends of my street photography... The only thing I still needed to do was make space on my laptop's hard disk, and move most of my folders to my two backup external hard disks...

Now guess what?! While I'm having not one, but a double backup system which I execute manually every few months at least, I just discovered that I managed to delete 4 of my February street shots folders completely, from all three my hard disks!! It probably happened yesterday of the day before, since I still have been working on these folders just recently.  OMG... now how did I manage that!!??? Well, the worst thing is: I know how I did it, and I know I did it profoundly! I was asked each time by the backup system whether I was sure, so: I can be sure: they are all gone ... Good heavens, how stupid can one be!! I was just so eager to get it done finally.
And the biggest joke of it is, that I also today discovered that it is not so much my photo-folders (those too, of course) but mainly in fact my Lightroom backup folders, that filled up my laptop's hard disk to the brim!! Didn't know that Lightroom actually doesn't overwrite older backup folders, but adds a new one every time a backup is made  :faint: And so I was collecting them since 2006   So yes, I deleted the bulk of them too..

But as for my street photo's , now here comes the "OMG, thank goodness for deviantART!!" ... because: the only street shot's I've left from those deleted February folders are ... those that I already uploaded on dA or in my Stash folder!!
Luckily, if I upload, I always upload the large file - although I've been advised in the past to only upload a smaller copy ... I usually find it too much work to make the jpegs smaller before uploading. Now, I'm ever so happy that I didn't do that, and that dA makes it possible for us to download our own files again. And also, I'm happy I did try and upload some of what I consider as my best shots every now and then, even while I didn't really have time to hang out here for long... I'll have to browse through my gallery now and figure out which images I'm missing, then download them one by one... but am I happy that I CAN do that, and that I will be able to recover of my February and March hard work!!

So, if you ask my advise: if you upload to dA, then do upload your largest possible file, even though you choose the display options much smaller  - And do select your best work first... One never knows if and when it happens that the originals get lost, but if it does, you may be so happy that this online backup has saved your best work, like it did mine now!

Thanks deviantART, for this great storage opportunity! It's a life saver for me right now! :dalove: :blowkiss:

Royal Celebrations in Amsterdam!

Journal Entry: Fri May 3, 2013, 1:10 AM

Amsterdam, the Netherlands, April 30 2013

Crowd follows Abdication ceremony on large screens by steppeland

After 33 years as monarch of the Netherlands, HM. Queen Beatrix abdicated the throne and her son Willem-Alexander became the new King. Following the abdication, now Princess Beatrix came on the balcony of the Royal Palace together with the new King Willem-Alexander and his wife now queen Máxima.  A little later, also the princesses Amalia, Alexia and Ariane joined their parents on the balcony, to wave at the crowd.

All over the country, celebrations took place to celebrate the new King. Especially in Amsterdam, where in the afternoon the official Investiture of the new King took place, and later in the evening the Royal boat ride on the River IJ, there was huge feast everywhere

3x3 Elegant Elephants Features + Journal

Journal Entry: Sat Feb 2, 2013, 12:06 PM

Journal entry:
House Moving over - Trying to get back on track

:bulletblue::bulletblue::bulletblue::bulletblue::bulletblue::bulletblue::bulletblue::bulletblue::bulletblue:

Yes, my marathon house moving adventure, that started some time at the end of September last year, after the sudden death of a dear friend - is now officially over. Last week, the key of the old apartment has been handed back to the housing company , and so the pressure of deadlines and goals to be reached is really over now. There are still some cardboard boxes waiting to be unpacked, a number of odd reparations and little jobs in the house that need some attention, a few drawers and cupboards that need re-organisation after the initial trying-things-out period... But  I gradually am trying to relax now and to find my roots again in my new living-space, where sweet memories and hesitant future dreams seem to blend into a strange alliance, unknown and tempting ...
It will still take some time before I really am rested and organised again, but I can now move on slowly and do it step by step...

Today, I want to start with picking up again an old routine here at dA, of featuring a 3x3 images pick from my different favourites collections, and in addition showing one top-fav image of the past few days...
And this time, I've dived into my "Elegant Elephants" collection... Please have a closer look at some of these great images, and if you like, do leave the artists a nice message too! ;)

I'm going to move house

:bulletblue::bulletblue::bulletblue::bulletblue::bulletblue::bulletblue::bulletblue::bulletblue::bulletblue:

I'm going to move house

Yes, there is no exact date known yet, but within a few months, I'll be moving to a smaller apartment here nearby in the same neighbourhood. So it's going to be a few very busy months for me. The new apartment is very familiar and has many nice memories for me, since it's the place where a dear friend, who passed away only some weeks ago, lived for many years. We had many beautiful hours, meetings and sharing there, and it's a lovely place to be.
It has a beautiful atmosphere, and although I miss my friend, it's somehow nice that I will now live in the same place where we have had so many good times together.
Similar to where I live now, the new apartment has a balcony too, with a lovely view on a little pond or lake - and that may offer great new 'from my balcony' - photography possibilities that I still have to discover... but... I will miss the gorgeous sunsets that I have from my balcony here. Oh, yes, I will have view on the sunset there too, and even more... : on the sunrise as well, but I'll be a few floors lower, and there will be more buildings somewhere in the picture... While here, the view is more open on free sky, with only some tree tops to block (or complete) the view.
So yes, I will miss the sunsets, and therefore, I want to make as good as possible use of the days I have still left here, to complete my collection of evening skies, because I know they are well loved by the many users of my stock images.
So my stock account :iconsteppelandstock: may be flooded with sunsets in the coming days and weeks - the result will be only depending on what nature and the universe is willing to display for us in the coming evenings... I'll have my camera ready...

I've started today, with a series of 8 Samhain sunset pictures - You can check them out in my Skies collection

Just a few thumbs as a teaser:

Introduction

I am very happy to be able to present to you this photo reportage about the Sacraments Procession, as I was able to see and photograph it during our vacation in Tirol, Austria, June 17, 2012.
It has taking me some time to prepare and upload all these pictures, and I really want to thank all my friends and watchers for their patience as they saw the images drop in their mail boxes with handsful at a time, over the past two weeks. And also, thanks for the encouraging comments and some fav's along the way.

Here is the full story, as a whole... :)

Sacraments Procession - General info

NOTE: all external links refer to a Wikipedia page

"A Sacraments procession is a devotional procession in the tradition of the Roman Catholic Church, ( and as I learned some other denominations like the Free Catholic Church in the Netherlands ) - in which the Blessed Sacrament  in a Monstrance in a solemn manner is carried by a priest through the streets of a town or village.
Usually, the Sacraments Processions go out on Sacraments Day. For this occasion, the priest is wearing the Cope, a specific liturgical vestment, and walks under a Baldachin " (Partially translated from the Dutch Wikipedia)

Preliminary to the procession, there is a solemn Eucharist in the church. Sometimes, this Eucharist also can be held outside.

During the procession, traditionally, the Priest with the Holy Sacrament is preceded by the acolytes , carrying the cross and some candles. Then follow the marching band and several groups of the village/town, in their best uniforms or traditional dresses. Often, representatives of these groups are carrying some of the statues of saints and other religious symbols important to that community. The procession can be followed by a (large) group of villagers in prayer (anybody can follow).
During the procession, the rosary is prayed, and religious songs are sung, accompanied by the marching band. There are several stopping places along the route, where the Blessed Sacrament is put down on a table or some kind of 'altar', and other traditional prayers are said, including a reading from the bible. At each stopping place, the people participating in the procession, including all bystanders and watchers, are blessed by the priest holding the Blessed Sacrament. This also can be combined with a blessing of the houses and fields.

A beautiful illustration of this old religious tradition is the painting Artesië by Jules Breton, 1857

:bulletblue: :bulletblue: :bulletblue:

We happened to have arrived on our vacation address in Elbigenalp, Tirol, just the day before the Sacraments procession would be held here.
So we were happy to have this occasion to see how the local people still participate in large numbers in this yearly repeated event, definitely a remarkable combination of culture, tradition, religion and devotion, and touristic attraction...

Thank you for having a look! I hope you enjoy this photo reportage as much as I did making it.
If you like, please also fav :+fav: , so that more people may get to see it. Thank you!

They have been marching through the village already, followed by some of the groups that will join in the procession -
probably to bring the community together to the church, for the Eucharist (see also general info above)
Note the ladies in front, carrying a little barrel with schnapps - They also both are holding some schnapps glasses ;)

This table will be carried along during the procession,
and at the stopping placed the Monstrance with the Blessed Sacrament
will be placed on the sculpture.
This area in Tirol is know for its amazingly beautiful wood carvings.
The Technical College for woodcarving, sign painting and guilding in Elbigenalp,
is unique of its kind as it is the only one in western Austria.
So it's quite likely that this too would be a local artwork (my guess, not confirmed)

NEW: Gallery Subfolders !! Fantastic!

NEW: Gallery Subfolders
The best change since a looong time!!  :  (Aug.3, 2012)

:bulletblue::bulletblue::bulletblue::bulletblue::bulletblue::bulletblue::bulletblue::bulletblue::bulletblue:

deviantART is introducing a New Premium Member Feature today: The Gallery Subfolders :w00t:

We can now finally make sub-divisions in our main gallery folders! What a great improvement that is! :wow:

You can read all about it here: Site Update: Gallery Subfolders, Signatures

Finally a way to start making my huge and varied galleries of both my main account and my stock account  tidier, and more easily to access for friends, watchers and visitors...

I couldn't wait trying it out, and you can see my first subdivided folder here: "Animals" (still under construction, but it's there!!)
I know it will be a huge work to get both my galleries completely re-organized, but it was soooo needed, and I am soooo ready for it!

Thank you so much, deviantART!  The fact that I will now be able to manage my galleries in a much better way may well be the last little push needed for my definite 'come back' here on dA! Totally delighted! :w00t:

(have to urgently get off my computer now, but I definitely will be back soon to work further on this!)

Photography by Steppeland

This morning, just before I left for work, I was looking at the video linked in   one of the previous journals of  :iconthestreetjournal: , where street photographer John Free speaks about "The-Five-Fs-of-Street-Photography" .
I particularly was touched by his introduction, and replayed it several times to write out this quote:

"You know, a lot of people say: "it's all about the eyes, and what you see" ... That photographers are seers....
No no no, I don't believe that. The eyes and seeing, they are just part of the tools that we use, just like the camera and the lens, the film ... It's not the eyes. Anybody can see that has eyes to see.
It's what we feel, and that we get out of the heart that matters. We have to convey a passion. We have to convey an understanding, we have to convey somebody's soul under their shirt."
(street photographer John Free)

With these words, John Free expressed exactly what it is that attracts me so much in street photography... The ability to be somehow touched by the soul of the people I meet on the street, and the possibility of capturing something of that, and sharing it with others, for them to be touched as well...

I've been making quite a lot of street images again, over the last few months, and have been uploading quite a few of them here on dA recently.
Some of them good, some less good, but each of them, images that somehow felt 'right' to me - because they somehow conveyed something of the 'distant encounter' with the people captured, and disclosed some aspects, some moments of their daily life, in all it's variety. Oh, no doubt, I'm always struggling with the technical aspects of my street photo's... some lack sharpness, some lack focus, or framing, or missed just the right moment... There is always something that is not exactly right, that could be better. And sure enough, there is always so much more to learn.

But when I uploaded "Innocent coffeecup romance":steppeland.deviantart.com/art/… last night, together with a handful other images I made on the funfair in Tilburg last Saturday, I knew that it has at least that: that little spark of heart, of soul, that is so important in my work as a street photographer.

How great was my surprise, and excitement - when I came back home after work - to find that exactly this image has been picked out and honoured with a DD by the great street photographer and current Community Volunteer for the Street Photography Gallery :iconstamatisgr: ...  StamatisGR has been my first introducer and great inspirator for street photography for several years now, and I value his work and his opinion very high. So this DD, the first for one of my street photographs, is one that thrills me to pieces (guess that's not a good English expression- but I'm sure you'll get what I mean LOL).

So thank you, Stamatis, for this great honour, and for all the support and encouragement I, and so many other (aspirant and experienced) street photographers received from you over the years. What you have been doing for Street photography here on dA - through :iconthe-yard-collective: and now as Community Volunteer for the Street Gallery - is beyond any measurement! You deserve a goldmedal for that!

Thank you all for your support of my work, and for the street-photographers among my friends, watchers and visitors here on dA... : Keep streeting with a  !

Because "It's not the eyes, it's the heart that matters..." !!

My day with the wolves...

Journal Entry: Thu Feb 9, 2012, 12:41 AM

Since a few weeks, on Saturdays,  I'm following a photography course in Artis Amsterdam Zoo, and last Saturday was the third meeting already.
It had started snowing the day before, and it was a beautiful, sunny winter day. So I had a great time hanging out around the Arctic Wolves' enclosure, and photographing to my hearts content all that was happening inside- and out... The above poster only shows a few of the many great pictures I made...

Maybe you'd like to come over to my recently started WordPress blog: DISCOVERING BEAUTY , to have a look at the little photo story (10 images) I made about
"Two boys and the wolves" - It's a combination of candid/ street photography and nature photography, and, well, just fun ;)

If you like, please follow my blog , and if you are on WordPress yourself, just leave me a link, so that I can follow you too!

Oh, and for my DUTCH-speaking dA-friends :  I have a Dutch Blog on Wordpress too: "Kijk hoe mooi!" - parallel, but not all the same as the English one (would be too boring for me to only translate  ) ... So if you like, you're most welcome sign up for both ;) - All the separate images of the above collage are on my Dutch blog now ;)

Have a great week all of you!
